Old Windmill Road North of Winston was part of Jefferson Highway

Although you wouldn’t guess it now, 140th Street, located just east of Winston, MO was the first maintained road through Colfax and Jefferson Townships in Daviess County.

It was actually part of an important early cross-country automobile route, called The Jefferson Highway

The Jefferson Highway was built in the 1920s as part of the National Auto Trail system. It was nicknamed the “Palm to Pine Highway,” for the varying types of trees found on either end – it stretched through the central United States from New Orleans, LA to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The Jefferson Highway was later replaced with the new numbered US Highway system in the late 1920s.

The windmill mentioned originally provided water for horses and was left in the middle of the road. It was a major and much used road connecting Bethany and Cameron from 1915-1925.

Unfortunately the windmill landmark on this road was removed several years ago.
